CORRECTIONAL SUPERVISOR, GARY SWADLING
Gary Swadling commenced his career in corrections on 3 January, 1977 at Her Majesty’s Prison, Rockhampton (Etna Creek). After taking long service leave, Gary will be set to retire with over 40 years’ service to QCS.
Gary has been a Correctional Supervisor since 1991, and has worked in Rockhampton for his entire career, changing centres only with the commissioning of Capricornia Correctional Centre in 2001.
Centre Services Manager, Mark Nelson, has worked with Gary for close to 30 years.
“Gary has always been a steady, by-the-rules kind of guy. I worked originally with him as my supervisor and he was somebody that I took direction from when I started. He was an acting supervisor then, and eventually became appointed. I think he’s been appointed for well over 20 years now,” says Mark.
“He is very family-oriented and very devoted to his wife Leann, his children and grandchildren. I’ve always respected and liked this about him.”
Gary’s wife, Leann, recalls him receiving various commendations for his service over the years, including his involvement in assisting with rescuing civilians from a car accident while undertaking a prisoner escort.
“Myself, his five children and 12 grandchildren are certainly proud of the work he does and what QCS contributes to keeping our community safe,” says Leann.
